Barbarians in the late Roman world?
Considering ethnicity in the Late Roman world, what does it mean to be a barbarian?
The barbarians were all Germanic tribesmen in the late Empire.
The Goths would be the modern Franks or French. The Vandals spread through Spain and across the Straits of Gibraltar into North Africa.
These groups spread down from modern Germany and left the Western Empire in shambles by the time Odoacer takes over in 476 A.D. He is a barbarian off the Iberian (Spanish) Peninsula and his ascension to the Roman throne marks the first time a non-Roman will control the Empire. This date is considered the official end of the Western Empire, although the Eastern Empire at Constantinople will continue until 1451 A.D. when the city falls to the Turks.
The barbarians are so named because they are without the civilizing influences felt by the Romans in their early days. They would need several hundred more years to develop any of those civilized habits and, in that time, Rome fell and Europe entered a period we call today the Medieval period or Middle Ages.

With all the news about people who have died as a result of being in what is known as a sweat lodge that was run by the authority of the motivation by James Arthur Ray, I think is important about this, what is, what happens, and if it is good or not.
The concept of sweating therapy dates back to at least 500 BC, if not more. Hippocrates spoke of it as a way to cure people of fever. The Roman Baths is heated to what might be regarded as extreme heat, which of course they were communal. Even the Mayans used as sweat lodges of some relaxation and therapeutic methods.
Native Americans have used Lodges sweat for centuries. The concept for them was more of a spiritual awakening and a ceremony of purification of body. temazcales wine in different sizes and shapes, but the intention was the same. Super heated stones come into the center of the hostel and during the ceremony, water is poured over the rocks to create a vapor of smoke thick. chants, meditations and prayers were spoken in many of them, while others require complete silence. Sometimes, specific odors are added to water, or the requirements for construction of the hostel including certain spices to help improve the experience.
There are a few things about the lodges that make them dangerous. One, they are not built too high. Almost none of them are constructed so that any person of average height may stand in them. Two, are not built either too broad. You will be put in the position that unless you are at the ends, its output would require that someone else has to go first to let you out, and then would have to go so, since this is a community activity, someone decides to leave ruins another person's spiritual experience. One person who spoke about the need to stay inside all the others because, as he was also experiencing respiratory problems. Expected to be someone who controls the group from outside and are supposed to intercede if he realizes the problems, but most of the time that this person will only respond if someone makes a verbal request, which is rare.
Focus is put on proper breathing, which is what always encouraged. However, when reading the stories of many who have gone through the process, almost all include discomfort, although some can also talk about what came out of the experience. Some have said they would do it again, and many have, but as many say it was an experience once you never have to do it again.
One problem with that sweat lodges are doing. People who have gone through the process with a tribe of native Americans express a different way than those people who do otherwise. In both cases, has recognized that people who are not in good condition health could suffer going through this ceremony. At the same time, people believe that this ceremony can cure many diseases.
It's probably best not to this if you have any reservations whatsoever. Extreme heat can cause great harm to the body, and quickly. By the time you recognize that you are having a problem, it might be too evening. This is dangerous and should only be practiced by people with great skill in doing so. You could make some people as much damage as it does them good.
