how do i explain to my dog that he is supposed to be guarding the house?
Duke, is a shepherd/wolf hybrid you whould think he would be a natural at this but he is way to friendly with strangers.
All dogs have different personalities, just like people. Talk to your vet about a reputable trainer in your area if you're serious about wanting him to have some guard skills. Good luck!

Keeshond Puppy And Dog
The Keeshond is a dog that can live in an apartment as long as frequent walks are available. She is fairly active indoors and makes a good watchdog, because in general likes to bark. She is great with older, considerate children and wants to be part of the family. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. She may be fine with other dogs and pets, especially if extensively socialized early. She loves everyone, especially to their human family.
* Approximate size of adults. The approximate adult size (two years or more) of the Keeshond is 17 to 19 inches at the withers (the highest point of the shoulder) and 35 to 40 pounds. Females slightly smaller range than males.
* Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and Keeshond is no exception. Be on the look out for canine hip dysplasia (looseness genetic based on the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), genetic eye disease, heart defects and problems skin. * History. The Keeshond is from the Netherlands, where they probably were bred from the Pomeranian, Samoyed, Chow Chow and Elkhound. They were used to guard barges. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1930.
