The Anglo Boer Magersfontein battlefield site in the South African War
In the light before dawn Monday, 11 December 1899, the General Andrew Wauchope led his men from the Highlands in a dawn attack on the Boer positions, which were believed to be holed up somewhere in the hills ahead of Magersfontein. At present, only the silhouette of kopie Magersfontein could be seen around 1000 meters in the distance. Wauchope continued across the plain towards the hills and disasters. 400 meters hell broke loose. No one had suspected that the Boers had camouflaged themselves in the trenches at the foot of the hills Magersfontein. Al final days of the victims placed in 902 deaths on the British side and 236 on the Boer side. Among the fallen Wauchope himself, just 200 meters from the trenches de Boer.
The Boer Magersfontein battlefield, the Anglo site is about 35 miles south of the diamond capital of Kimberley in South Africa next East Kimberly N12 is connected to Cape Town. The last 7 miles is a gravel road that runs on the south side of the hills Magersfontein. There is a great gateway important on the left that leads to the area that was occupied by the Boers in the battle. Be sure to get a map at the door. Once through the front door makes one to the visitor center. About half upwards, there is a fork in the road. The right path leads to the foot of the hills and trenches Magersfontein age Boer, while left the road ends at the visitor center.
The visitor center contains an excellent museum displaying many artifacts of the battle. These include guns, rifles, uniforms and artillery shells. From the visitor center there is a path leading toward the edge of kopie Magersfontein where one can get a good British view of the positions below in the distance. A covered shelter contains a small display and information tables on the various points of interest in the area. Back and past the visitor center, there is a monument on the highest point Magersfontein kopie dedicated to the memory of the officers and men of various regiments Highland who fell here on 11 December 1899. Just to the west are roads that lead to little Boer gun positions. A trip to the foot of kopie and line Magersfontein de Boer old trench is well worth a visit. The graves located hundreds of meters from east to west in a zigzag line.
The British position can be visited by heading back to the front door and across the road to the south. Here, a vast plain stretches for miles. The area is only a sparely vegetation few thorn trees and anthills offer any protection to British troops. That dot the landscape are the numerous monuments to the various regiments Britons, whose men dropped here on that fateful day. These include the memorials to the Northumberland Fusiliers, the Infantry Highland Light and the Black Watch. Far to the east, is a monument to a Scandinavian regiment that fought on the side of the Boers, and was totally destroyed by the British. The monuments that may be hundreds of yards away and more or less indicate the position where most men of a regiment in particular fell.
Looking back north toward the hills Magersfontein, one wonders what went through the minds of men who participated in the battle that morning before dawn. The hills look ominous in the distance, almost as if a great refuge fire-breathing dragon in the form of bullets and cannon fire.
