Old, lonely, frustrated, and to Remember worried that when life is over? Move to a small town. Everyone will attend his funeral or the wake that preceded him, and if they can not be ensured that someone in your home or office does. Among the many reasons to retire in Natchitoches, what happens when you die is not mentioned, and perhaps should be. Because death and dying in a small town is so different from how the process works in a big city. Small towns value life, both coming and going, and the "money goes in the mouth" stage is played regularly as hordes of people in parked cars in the line of the foot to say its final goodbye to this or that, a little known, or known by many, but still worried.
In the small town of Natchitoches, Louisiana, saw the city to become a long farewell to a sister city with a life celebrated and end at the local Catholic Church. Many people knew about the funeral, even those who did not know the deceased and referred to it simply as "Eulah's sister." The fact is, however, was a topic among the elderly for several days, and those who never knew her found something to reflect the concerns expressed by residents of the city in every part of the parish.
A citizen wanted in that town fell ill and remained in the hospital for several weeks. He had been ill from time to time for years. But this time was much more serious, because the good man died in hospital. Hundreds of people poured through the hospital doors, rather than the hospital could handle at times, as he staggered into small groups daily. When came death, the afflicted people again turned on full force for a friend, as it had in the few weeks just before ..
Then, How different is dying in a small town like Natchitoches? In a large city, where turnover is constant residents, people are going and out constantly, and the large number of deep relationships difficult people, death is barely a whisper in the din of a busy world. One is inclined to listen, "I hear Muriel died. I wished I could go to his funeral, but you know it was just a busy time for me and I could not." But in small towns there is a difference. Every soul is important and one loss is noticed, remembered, and recognized by the empty space that is visible.
