In this day and age, origin of the flags is a very debatable, though the flags were used as symbols thousands of years by ancient cultures. There is a section of people who believe first flags that originated in China, while others say that "the banner of the Roman Empire, was the first veritable flag.
Some people do not accept "standard" as a sign of true primarily because the original standards of the Roman legions were not flags. They were symbols like the eagle of Augustus Caesar X. A military unit from Scythia used a dragon as their symbol, but had a tail that fluttered in the wind. Legions soon copied the idea and came to have a flexible rule for themselves than is our modern flag.
Flags were also used in the field battle. The main purpose of the flag was the identification of individual leaders. For example: The Knights (in Europe) the Samurai (in Japan) and general under the imperial army (in China).
From the time of Christopher Columbus onwards, it became customary for ships to carry flags which declared its nationality. This has become a legal requirement now. These indicators evolved into national flags and maritime flags of today. Because there was no means of communication between two ships at sea, the flags became the preferred means of communications. This led to various forms of signals used in the Navy today. For example: Alpha, Bravo and so on.
At the beginning of the 17th century, armies completely replaced centralized European knights. This that's when the flags not only became the means of identifying their nationalities, but also individual military units. The importance of flag was drawn to new levels. However, these indicators were too dangerous to those who carried them and the First World War that were removed from the battlefield. Since then, the flags have been used only on ceremonial occasions.
