The Houston Space Center is the top tourist attraction in Houston and it is very easy to see why more schools and private visitors come here than any other tourist attraction in this great city.
President Kennedy threw down the challenge for America to reach the moon by the end of the 1960's and the story of mankind's first steps on the moon and even further into the depths of space are preserved here at the Space Center. From the very earliest days of man's efforts to create a propulsion vehicle that could get itself off the ground to the most advanced and dangerous efforts to send man to other planets in the solar system, the Houston Space Center is the most comprehensive display of its kind in the world with many exhibits having actually been used in space and one of the very few places in the world where you can hold an actual moon rock
The Houston Space Center will take you on a journey through time and space as the equipment and technology that was developed since the days of Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocketry, are preserved for posterity and your enjoyment
It is not just the huge array of equipment that is on display here as there are numerous opportunities to see and become involved in the training programs that have been used to train and prepare astronauts for their trip into space. Now people from all walks of life and of all ages are able to experience for themselves what it takes to become an astronaut.
Becoming an astronaut is a dream many of us have had from childhood, however the reality is very different from what we imagine; training is stringent and before training can even begin there are minimum mandatory requirements in respect of education, physical fitness and mental aptitude. Less than 5% of applicants are actually passed for astronaut training but you can gain firsthand knowledge of just what it takes.
At the Houston Space Center you can experience weightlessness and the sensation of lift off from the launch pad of Cape Kennedy while talking to a real life astronaut who has ventured into space. Try your hand at landing the Space Shuttle and experience what it feels like to walk in space wearing a space suit! Get an inside look at how we are preparing for manned missions to Mars and elsewhere in the solar system too. There is the Kids Space Place section where children can experience and interact with exhibits and explore the many different facets of space flight and exploration while living on the Space Station of commanding the Space Shuttle.
The Houston Space Center is open throughout the week with extended opening hours during the summer and some holidays so check the website at www.spacecenter.org for more information. Microwave ovens, satellite television, Teflon pans and Velcro are just some of the products that has brought us through advances in the current space program decades ago. Adding to this impressive list of consumer products from outer space is what has become known as foam memory.
This unique material has been finding its way into all sorts of products, including upholstered furniture. But not when the impact was as great as in the incorporation of memory foam mattresses to sleep.
The development of memory foam mattresses makes sense because the original design intent of the foam was used by astronauts as a way to sleep in zero gravity or outer space. As a great example of a failure of success, the foam was never used in space very critical for several reasons, not least of which was the high levels of chemicals outside the gas chambers.
The process chemicals out of gas levels chemical pollution introduced which was not very favorable to the housekeeping atmosphere of the average of the manned spacecraft. Materials that are approved for manned space flight must meet several critical levels of cleaning and waste must be free of chemicals and other hazardous substances.
The good news for many sleepers is that memory foam was found to make an excellent material for sleeping here on planet Earth. Since the seventies, was a quest to find an appropriate use of foam in this unique and very dense. The answer came in the form of various brands of mattresses that incorporate a certain amount memory foam in the design. Now memory foam can be found inside the mattress and away from conventional mattresses in the form of add-on pads you can add a layer of foam almost any size bed.
Memory foam is very dense compared to other foam materials and can be conformed the body so that other bedding materials simply can not. There can be large differences in the memory foam mattress from a manufacturer to another manufacturer. Variations may include more than the entire material thickness, hardness, and quality.
The hardness and density of foam can be compared by looking at the weight per cubic meter material. Think of a box one foot square in size and imagine the box is to be a piece of memory foam. There is a difference in density between the material that is half past two pounds per cubic foot and the material that is four pounds per cubic foot.
As a general rule the higher the foam density, the most expensive the mattress. The overall quality of a memory foam mattress may depend on other materials used, because the layer of memory foam may only make up three to four inches of total mattress thickness. Memory foam can be found atop the traditional inner spring designs that are wrapped in foam latex with visco-elastic foam placed on top, all wrapped in a traditional mattress cover.
The process of selecting a foam mattress memory is the same selection of all the conventional beds. Give the mattress thoroughly tested given that we had a bit of our lives in bed. On average Most of us spend more than 20 years of our lives in bed.
Like everyone who tries to be an astronaut, not all products developed for the space program actually makes that cut. Visco-elastic foam memory was one of those inventions, but fortunately, made the cut in a way that has benefited all those interested in a good night's sleep and an alternative to conventional mattresses.
