Do Neodymium magnets have sides with different polls (north and south)?
I am doing a science experiment with small, powerful magnets and I need to know if they have north and south polls.
All magnets are dipoles, that is, they have north and south poles.
Your neodymium magnets are kind of like a ceramic that is formed in a very powerful magnetic field and they preserve that field in them. The manufacturer decides which direction to set the field relative to the shape of the magnet, but typically when you buy magnets, the manufacturer tells you which way they are polarized. Usually it's along the longest axis, but it can vary. Find a magnet that you know the polarization of and use it to test other magnets. You will always find that there's a location on the magnet where your known one sticks to your unknown one--that's basically the center of the pole on the unknown one.
Neodymium magnets are also strong enough that just by hanging them on a thin string they will align north-south along their poles. That's another way to locate the poles on a magnet (but it won't work if you accidentally hang it with one pole facing up and the other down--only with the two poles parallel to the ground.
