West Highland White Terriers (Westies) began their history as the undesirable white descendants of the Cairn Terrier dark. With the popularity of dogs today is hard to believe that the early Westies were usually drowned or shot.
A breeder, however, Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch, is credited with the recognition the potential of white coat. The legend is that he made the dog more visible as it ran through the brush, and prevented it confused with the dam during foxhunts. The servant by their white coats, and for many years, were known as Poltalloch Terriers.
The Westies, and is commonly called today, the Cairn, Scottish, Skye, and Dandie Dinmont, Westhighland Terriers are closely related breeds that arose in the rugged terrain of Scotland. They were bred to chase small prey, such as otters, foxes, badgers, and vermin.
Terrier characteristics and temperament of both was upgraded into a small dog strong determination to be his quarry to ground.
It has a small compact body with short legs that allow it to run and squirm through the bush, where he lived his usual prey. Westie's double coat has coarse outer hairs to shed dirt and debris, and thick soft.
Like many hunting dogs are considered intelligent. They are also likely to follow any creature that runs it. Barking announced for the hunter who was in the chase. Westie dogs were trained and bred to be more aggressive the harder he tried to escape the barrier.
The origin of the word terrier ',' firm is the Latin word '- earth. It was given to them, and all terrier breeds, because once it runs its prey to land, dig. Westies today still have a tendency to be diggers.
The modern dog westhighland white terrier is a tough, tough race that is also loyal and friendly. That preserve the features of their ancestors: the love of hunting, a moderate tendency to bark, the habit of digging, and are likely to be a little aggressive during play hard.
They are a bit stubborn need consistent and firm discipline. However, they also are easy to care, and natural watchdogs. Those who took a Westie as a pet meet with a faithful companion, lover of life of the dog.
Terrier puppies, like all very young dogs, should be trained in short sessions of five minutes or less. Make the workout game for you and your terrier. Generously reward your dog with praise. They are also known to react well to food training.
Your Westie will become confused if it lashes out in his bad behavior, especially if they are still angry after the behavior has stopped. Your little terrier wants please you, and always reward the behavior you want to promote, encourage you to be part of the dog's personality.
Like the Scottish Terrier and other terrier breeds, Westies are barkers. Bark is the natural form of a dog to communicate a variety of feelings of happiness, anxiety, boredom. Terrier breeds, however, are quicker to other dogs bark.
The natural reaction of dog owners is to yell at your terrier to stop barking. This is exactly the wrong thing to do. Your dog hears his voice as a kind of human cortex, and it reinforces the behavior. The key is to stay calm, verbally and physically, and broadcast the terrier's excited emotional state. Say 'no bark in a calm but firm tone. Never forget to reward the dog when it stops barking.
West Highland Terriers are intelligent, active dogs, and sometimes barking out of boredom. Be sure to provide your dog with walks and the right game to stimulate their minds and bodies. You can divert your attention with a chew toy that can be filled with a food treat.
It is not hard to see then that the West Highland White Terrier definitely qualifies as one of the best friends of man.
