Barrier Reef prepares for a cyclone
With cyclone Hamish circling nearby, thousands of vacationers have been evacuated from locations such as Fraser Island and other popular tourist resorts as central Queensland braces for the inevitable impact. Hervey Bay residents are being urged to leave their homes before the devastating winds and heavy cyclonic rains hit the region. 10,000 residents from the low-lying danger zones between Burrium Heads and River Heads are being warned to evacuate the area as the category 4 cyclone heads in on a similar path to the devastating cyclone Wanda which caused untold damage in 1974. And once again, the potential hazard of main escape routes being cut off are very real dangers for the residents in the region. The 1974 Wanda claimed numerous lives and devastated over 6000 properties, homes and garages. These are but a few of the ever increasing climatic disasters that mother nature is currently casting over the planet. 2007 brought us a Tsunami in Asia, 2008 the New Orleans' hurricanes. It's hurricane season again and as much as those who live along our coasts like to have their homes near the water, they should also have a very real fear they face realistically at this time every year. Hurricanes in recent years have caused a terrible destruction of many homes, businesses, and for the life of people they endured. It can make you wonder if the risk associated with living so close to the water is really worth the risk involved.
As this article is being written, Hurricane Dolly is rapidly approaching the Texas coast and Mexico. Is expected to make landfall near Brownsville, Texas for the evening and have sustained winds approximately sixty miles per hour. It has been upgraded to two hurricanes so far. That might not seem as devastating as compared to recent hurricanes years to land in the United States, but have no doubt that even a category two will make that good of damage.
Probably many households will be totally impressed by the winds and floodwaters that come with it. Thousands more may be severely damaged and as wind and water. Hopefully, there will be no loss of life, but there are usually at least a few and a hurricane that will be a small amount, if that's all. Although people have been hospitalized for the preparation of the windows and prepare to evacuate if necessary, there is nothing that can stop the damage that is by come secure.
When the first shock of the hurricane has affected the coastline, Hurricane Dolly was downgraded over time, but still have a lot reason to worry. There will be torrential rains expected to about fifteen inches and may well cause flooding along the Rio Grande. There are fears that the levees along the river does not hold and that the low-lying areas may suffer a great amount of damage caused by floods. Those living near dams were trying to start risk bagging sand for several days in advance of the event.
When we know there is an impending disaster to take place, can make us realize how helpless that can be sometimes when it comes to the forces of Mother Nature. We can only hope that the consequences of this particular hurricane, not even close to the devastation that remained after hurricanes Charlie, Andrew and Katrina. You only have to wait and see with anxiety.
