Henry Kamen's Spanish Inquisition is an amazing experience. This is a very detailed, supremely scholarly and last instance, enlightening account of a historical phenomenon whose identity and reputation have become an icon. So much has been written about him, so many words been said that one might think that there is not much new to learn. But this book is where Kamena really comes into its own, because it reveals the popular understanding of the Inquisition as little more than myth.

It exploits the idea that the most popular bodies of inquisitors had their nose in everyonee € ™ s business. It was actually a fairly rare event that someone is called before. And besides, if you live far from a small number of population centers, the chances that you will hardly have known of its existence.

Also exploded the myth of a great number of heretics burned at the stake. Yes, it happened, but nowhere near the numbers that popular misconceptions might claim. In fact, the most common practice is burn in effigy convicted because the defendant had fled sometimes years before the sentence, or might have died in custody pending the case reaches its conclusion.
